About Cairns GFC

The Early Days

Mr. William Newton of Port Jackson NSW is reported to have landed the first black marlin caught in the Pacific on the 11th March, 1854. The fish was caught on hand line in Broken Bay. It was nearly a hundred years later that the presence of these fish was confirmed by the commercial fisherman out of Cairns.  Today, Cairns can boast catches of bigger black marlin than anywhere in the world.
